More on BabywearingAs a new mother I wanted nothing more than to make sure my baby was safe and happy. He had lived inside of me for nine months, and I knew that he depended on me totally for all of his needs. What better way to be sure that he was taken care of then to have him close to me all the time?
Having researched traditional cultures in school, I knew that it was more than common for mothers to carry their babies and young children around in cloth carriers. For example, in tribal cultures in South America women cook, clean, and work outdoors while wearing their babies. In many Asian cultures, babies do not touch the ground until they are six months old!
This is because babies need to be close to their mothers. It was my greatest instinct as a new mother. My body ached when I was away from him. So I began to carry him in a sling. As a newborn, he rested in it on my belly, in the same exact position he was in during most of my pregnancy. He was snug close to my warm body and his needs could be met within seconds.
Now, he is a happy, calm, healthy baby that loves seeing the world as a safe, loving place to be. Now I recommend that every mother wear her baby. I truly believe it is the best choice a mother can make.
